Because of the New Year’s holiday, West Hawaii Hui Laulima will not meet on its regularly scheduled date Jan. 1. The next meeting will be Feb. 5.

Harrison teaching meditation Sunday
“Teachings of Awakening With Gavin Harrison” meets from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3, at Waimea Events Salon, 66-1664 Waiaka St., Waimea. Sitting and walking meditation and talk are planned. Groups are nondenominational and open to all. Experienced and beginning meditators welcome. Bring a meditation cushion. Chairs are available. Donations are accepted.

Library hosting squash presentations
Anna Peach, owner of Squash and Awe Farm, will offer two presentations at North Kohala Public Library to jump-start a new year of healthy eating and living. The first presentation at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 4, will focus on the amazing properties of squash; how to grow them, why to eat them, and ways to enjoy them.
Peach will share her simple fermentation process to enhance a variety of vegetables at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1.
Both programs are free and open to the public.

Officer of the Month to be honored
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Peter Tourigny as its “officer of the month” at noon Jan. 6, for his outstanding performance as a member of the Hawaii Police Department.
The guest speaker will be Tami MacAller addressing the issues of tobacco and youth.
The committee encourages and supports the police department in its efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce laws. It also provides needed police equipment for use by Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.
The public is invited to attend the luncheon. The cost of the luncheon is $20, all inclusive at Huggo’s Restaurant. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Jan. 4.
Young Brothers supports VASH
Young Brothers, Lmtd. has awarded a $1,000 grant to VASH, The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii. VASH provides support services to visitors who experience adversities such as crime victimization, medical emergencies, or the death of a loved one while visiting Hawaii Island.
